I think they're both Veiligglas
-
Double Ingot !! But this one isn't one, ?? I don't recognize it, probably foreign, maybe Vacor like Steph said ?? Oop !! looks like Art & me posted at exactly the same time w/ the same answer !!
-
Yeah !! the rollers really did a number on the first two #1 Veiligglas, even has the common air bubble in the middle. I have many defective dug Heaton I kept, I like them just as much as the regulars, all part of history. Some Dug Heaton w/ asmade manufacture defects, double ingots, footballs, eggs, pancakes, barbells, etc.....
-
Hmm !! Very similar to the one sent to you from overseas, I'm still on the fence on this one ??

I'm gonna stick w/ MFC slag !!
-
I'll say MFC green slag, yes, old !! Good shape for an old boulder.

I don't use anything w/ abrasives in it myself, no matter how light or fine. It may appear to have cleaned the marble and shined it up nicely at first but in actuality you may have "Polished" the mib. Under a 20 x loupe (or better) you can see the tiny circular microscopic scratches that it leaves just like the finest jewelers rouge does. A polished mib if noticed will only fetch a fraction of what an untouched mint surface will, some people won't even touch them.. I had a couple really bad experiences cleaning w/ a light abrasive, I thought I had made the mibs look new until I put the mag to them, Aaaaah !! I googled "removing rust stains from glass" and this is what it spit out. I've never tried any of these methods !! but as said "corn starch" is still a light abrasive so I might be little leery of using it ?? LINK : https://www.thecrownchoice.com/cleaning-guides/how-to-remove-rust-from-glass/ There certainly use some different methods on this site ?? When I was in the Navy in boot camp we used vinegar and newspaper to clean windows, so clean birds were running into the windows all day, but that glass had been getting cleaned twice a day for at least the prior 50 years, probably still is !!

Are wavy "Lips" a Dead Give Away for a Vitro?
Chad G. replied to Marbleized's topic in Marble I.D.'s
One thing about marbles, always an exception to every rule (several). What's that old saying "The more you know, the more you realize you don't know" -
Just sticking to mibs & I.D.'s no intentional misuse of names in "other" professions or offense intended.. I worked in the woods too, we tried to avoid "Fire Devils" coming up the gorge through the timber behind us and eating us alive. Running uphill for a half a mile or more w/ your face planted to the ground eating dirt it's so steep & burning sticks hitting you in the back of the head is no fun, I agree !!
-
Guess I'm gonna start followin ya ??

I hope this link helps Bruce, thank goodness I've never had to go beyond "non abrasive" soap a stiff brush and soaking in hot water ?? Older marbles are generally made from some good tough glass & are pretty scratch resistant, I've heard just about everything. If I was gonna do any experimenting I'd use a cull to see what happens first. LINK : https://www.allaboutmarbles.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=41611&p=306884&hilit=cleaning+rust+stains#p306884

Ah !! ya got me Brad, I was totally expecting you know what, though I did become a bit suspicious seeing the 3 laughing faces on the thread header. Man you got a killer view, much like that I only live 2.5 miles from the Columbia so a beach close by as well. Isn't the PNW great, no where else I'd rather live. Oop !! were on glass chat, I'd better post a mib. SUBMARINE not the best in the west but just as much going on inside as out side an older handmade w/ one end being a melted pigtail & the other barely showing a bit of faceting, I'd say somewhere from 1850 - 1870 or so. Almost forgot, 1.095" (just over an inch) -
Are wavy "Lips" a Dead Give Away for a Vitro?
Chad G. replied to Marbleized's topic in Marble I.D.'s
Ah yes !! I agree w/ "Vitro" thanks for the closeups Most of the time the top & bottom do look like that (lips), that is when they're not opaque patches on the marble. -
I really like your pic quality Gladys, nice crisp and clear & yes some "killer Akro's" to top it off !!

Yes I would be happy as well Brad, I see a "blowhole" some "pitting" & what looks like "dimples" or depressions where gas bubbles released at the surface when the marble was still hot, all typical for so many Pelts & one more reason for me to go that way. In fact I'm convinced that's what it is. A pretty rare Pelt & VVVHTF in any condition & even more so in that Monstrously huge size.

Looks like a monster opaque black base "Peltier Clown" to me but I don't see typical lazy S seam on one side, they don't always have it !! Hmm, here's a pic of an opaque black base Pelt Clown for comparison, what do you think ?? I'll say Peltier Clown Pictures of another Opaque black base clown exhibiting lazy "S" seam I just found a pic of a clown just as big or bigger, the size isn't stated "but" the big one in the middle of the pack. Can you please post a couple closer shots of the seams ?? -
You have a good point Bruce, would reduce at least some of the "name game" confusion for those serious enough about this hobby !! But take forever to straighten out & indeed many are set in their ways and don't want change, and are unwilling to learn, I know I had to bend a bit.
