May you all be Happy and safe!! Peace,Galen -
Just saying over the years a larger variance of what fits a certain type, name, seems to occur. Another reason I do not like names for marbles. Just like the term submarine for soe CACs. Originally it was a transparent green based marble with orange swirling. Now any transparent base with lots of color inside the marble gets called a submarine. As a Blue Ray was blue base orange striping. Now any transparent Blue base with any color striping gets called a Blue Ray. Just something that happens over time.

Originally Cobras were one long color glob(multi or single colored) inside that widened at one end looking like a Cobra snake.

Just A Few Marbles To Night On The Bay
lstmmrbls replied to mmuehlba's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Thanks for clearing that up Steph. -
Whom ever buys the cobalt one will have a contemp. the other appears legit. The very obvious dark centers on the spots of the Cobalt are a dead give away. Of course the lack of seam makes it beyond obvious.

Just A Few Marbles To Night On The Bay

Neat cork But the Ira Fresse thing with Akro is all bologna and they didn't make corks till after 31. Here is some great info. http://www.akronmarb....ated_terms.htm FRESSE, IRA: An employee of The Akro Agate Company who experimented with automatic gob feed technology in the early 1920’s, applied for two US Patents 1,529,947 and 1,529,948 in 1922. Like all early US experiments with gob feed technology, these efforts were not successful. Had these patents actually worked they’d have been the most valuable patents in the world glass industry earning many hundreds of millions of dollars in royalty fees. The first practical automatic gob feeder, applied for in 1925, by Ernst Peiler, patent purchased by a trust of major US glass companies in 1926, known as The Hartford Empire Co.; first adapted to the manufacture of marbles in 1927 at The Christensen Agate Co. under contract with Hartford who patented same. The Akro Agate Company licensed its first gob feeder from the Hartford Empire in the fall of 1928. Both Fresse gob feeder patents were voided in the Federal Courts. FREESE IMPROVEMENT: A term used by some collectors under the mistaken belief that due to Freese receiving a patent it must have worked. Mistakenly believed by some collectors that the Freese patents had something to do with eliminating the shear-marks on a machine-made marble to make them smoother or more spherical, which is actually a function of a marble forming machine and not a gob feeder, of which Fresse patented. Also, mistakenly believed by some collectors to have something to do with off-setting the helically grooved cylinders of a marble forming machine. FRESSE, PRE-: The term “Pre-Fresse” is used by collectors to identify a design feature appearing on Akro Agate Company “Prize Name” marble (called Popeye by collectors) that resemble tiny feather -like features on the demarcation-line between two colors of glass. Collectors perceive this as a diagnostic feature revealing the marble’s date of manufacture as previous to Ira Fresse’s invention of The Akro Agate Company’s gob feeder, or pre 1922 and that Popeye marbles manufactured with the Fresse gob feeder do not carry these same feather-like features. The problem with the term (besides the fact the Fresse gob feeder didn’t work, never produced marbles and its patent was voided in federal courts) as presently used by collectors, a marble with a Pre-Fresse design feature is a gob fed marble made almost 5 years before the first successful use of a gob feeder and almost a decade before The Akro Agate Company obtained a working gob feeder. -
Manganese can a glow but not the greenish glow produced by uranium dioxide. Manganese is the clarifying agent that turns some earlier glass a beautiful purple when exposed to UV(sunlight) over a length of time. Or heavily bombarded with medical type UV lights for short periods.

Do not really want to get into this again. I believe most of Alans best marbles have been sold. -
Wow, M!b$ --- Just Saw The Marblalan Cac Album

I saw a few marbles from Alans personal collection at the Vegas show today. -
I believe the one Steph has marked as the Older style was actually the second version of MK rainbows. The first showed very distinct patch ribbon patch with very minimal blending straight edges and very opaque distinct colors on the white base. The MKs with oxblood also appear to be type 2s. A study and book on MKs would be very nice to have.

I bet he gets there earlier for the next show!! If my flight leaves at 3 or 4 I pack up when I have to to get to the airport in time. If I buy table space I am the one who will decide when it is time for me to leave. I try to stay as long as possible and also believe most should. But making it a rule, will probably just keep more people from getting a table. Some of us often get a table as a courtesy to the folks putting on the show as most sales and trades for many of us are made before the show. I rarely sell at the show anywhere near what I do during room trading.

Three New Marbles From Morphys
lstmmrbls replied to Killermarbles's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
You going to be at Vegas next weekend? -
Turns out he was just fishing around looking to find out what it may bring. I also found out the $6,000 was not a hard cash offer. Although they were surprised when I told them the marbles were now on Ebay. also it seems no one could get close ups or descriptions of any damage so some of the marbles may be in played with condition.

Randy, your camera is focusing on the background. Try pulling back 1/2"-1" after it focuses before pushing the shutter all the way. Or see if it has a center focus setting -
Thanks for the great link Jereon. I need to adjust my time frames. And I now wonder if that poster may be from the 1920s. Sorry folks, back on track

Jereon, Absolutely fantastic marble but that type(handgathered faceted pontil handmade) does show up in a Catalog from around 1880 I beleive. Directly under the box in this add http://i119.photobuc...-1183927117.jpg could be 1860 or 70 but I am still looking for proof they were making glass marbles in 1860

This Might Be The Best Post Office Story Yet
lstmmrbls replied to BobBlock's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Never had one problem and can't believe how they do what they do so cheaply(oh wait, they are way in the red), But past that, I have sent and received thousands of letters and packages in the last 15 years and the only problems were when someone sent UPS or Fedex and they just throw the package in the front yard. EDIT: hope I didn't just curse myself with this post!! -
Just go get it fixed, What can they take from you for payment if you can't pay? Sometime our morality can keep us from thinking properly. And I would say saving your life is more important that $. Get out the door and get to the hospital. When a doctor say get to the hospital get to the hospital. There is nothing to be afraid of other that getting fixed. mom used to say you can't squeeze blood from a turnip.
