  1. What nots( or just neat pretty items) became very vogue during Victorian times. They even made a huge variety of displays we now call what not shelves. I have no doubt the large round marbles were often put on display on these shelves mantles etc. Here is one I have on my mantle. They were also made to hang on the wall and large ones were like curio cabinets that stood on the floor.
  2. Do some study on how the modern clay workers make the millefiora. very neat look but making them, doesn't really seem like a big deal. Make a roll of alternating layers then roll it smaller and smaller. This was one method I found.
  3. I think Haydn wrote that Concerto for her!!!!!!
  4. Al, you can also change the sky drive settings(or disable)

  6. I have seen cane cut marbles(swirls) and even some sulphides in the claw feet so I am sure it is possible they did some big clearies. Is there any sign of an opposite pontil? ,And is that the type where the ball actually moves in the holder?( A real caster ball)
  7. actually the closer I look it appears that the smooth area may have been where it was under one of the (claws) as it moved?) or is that just an optical illusion. Looks like it has worn down some of the scratches. Just doesn't look at all like a cane cut mark to me.
  8. Neat clear one. I have not seen that type but the ball looks it may have come from some type of mold. Odd very large circular pattern seen from this view. Size of ball?
  9. More pictures needed to know for sure but I certainly see why he has questions.
  10. I should have clarified furniture feet (ball & claw feet). And I have never seen a vintage clear one that was not from a mold. And I have had dozens and probably seen over a hundred. Last one is a 3 piece mold http://media.liveauctiongroup.net/i/8597/9908724_1.jpg?v=8CD3A5F15C45340 http://image0-rubylane.s3.amazonaws.com/shops/annasantiques/10045.1L.jpg?96 http://robinsonsantiques.com/feet/piano-stool/piano-stool-lg-2.jpg
  11. I have seen a few folks at shows arguing that these were Peltier marbles. I believe they are Foreign and have nothing to do with Peltier. Very similar to the figure 8s but I believe they are from a different (more recent?) manufacturer. I may be mistaken but I believe Chuck may have been at one show in So Cal. that these type marbles were at.
  12. Now I really want to see the molds and methods for the large ones. Maybe a patent search for glass caster balls?
  13. ade, One for the collection, one for myself and the "first off cane marble which I think you have". I just can't remember it being 2
  14. Neat info. I figured they were made many at a time just never knew exactlywhat the mold looked like.
  15. got a pic where you can see the sprue(pore in spot)bump and the lines circling the ball.
  16. The Czech types do appear as 2 different halves of glass most of the time. The other types are usually clear or solid color and just look like glass poured in a mold.
  17. Some marbles(glass balls) were made in a mold like this bullet mold. Some were actually 3 piece molds. They are most common in codd bottles and furniture castors http://www.nps.gov/history/museum/exhibits/revwar/image_gal/morrimg/bulletmold.html. I am not sure how the Czech type were made(Winnies marble) but we still call them bullet molds because they have a rough seam running the circumference of the marble that is usually ground off in the machine grinding process the go through.
  18. Those commercials absolutely crack me up. Some friends have young teenage daughters.
  19. Rich, its all good, you have a long way to go. Lets hope nine is enough for you http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/records-3000/most-coronary-stent-implants/
  20. That type of value is totally dependent on ones selling resources. I have enough that I know I would get darn close to a "Real Value". If all one had was a pawn shop they would not get anywhere near 'Real Value" I agree. We need a book on this stuff(LOL). I thought short selling is what I should have done with my home 3 years ago?
  21. Cool! These are older IMO. I will try and get a pic of the neat seam that runs around each little ball. They are far from round and smooth. looks like they were poured in a mold then refired in a kiln to help smooth them out.
  22. This is the only one I have seen. Box says Glass Ball Mosaic and it also says that on the top of the directions that have French on the bottom. The glass board only says Registered on 2 opposite sides
  23. I know the 20 dollar bills I put in the safe 20 years ago bought a lot more than the ones I got at the bank yesterday. But as soon as I spend them they will have the same darn value (LOL)
