"It implies you know as if it was put in Your ear who it was". No,it does not.--It implies I heard a rumor. The rumor is a dead end road, literaly. Im sure as hell not going to give you a name of someone who can no longer defend themselves or what they said. Do you get it? There are no more beans for me to spill, and my karma is just fine. -

Marble Playing Ring
FISHSLAYERMARRBLEGRIFF replied to skoronesa's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
I think if I were to play marbles now,I would want the play area to be elivated, to about 3&1/2 ft.,and a covering, similar to a pool table. Of course, when I did play marbles, the "play area" was the fire pit,I lined the bottle up,in front of. You know, back when bb guns and sling shots were toys, and pc didnt exist!--LOL -

I cant remember the precise time when they showed up. Kind of like,"I was 3 or 4,when I tried to give Tiger,my cat,a bath in the swimming pool",,,didnt end well,FOR ME! 2002 sounds about right,Columbus show,Lennox Inn,I was driving a 1987 camero,,,, Mike Art (and his bother),is the closest to the "source" that I am aware of. The rumor that someone knows who made them, was put in my ear within the year, the marbles had surfaced. I miss the old Lennox Inn,,,that place was perfect for a marble shows. -

The original,"story" was they were dug marbles. At least that was the story when they surfaced at the Lenox Inn. Im still sticking with,"If its too good to be true,it probably is". My logic and knowledge tells me they were not authentic. ALL the marbles that showed up at the show were dead mint, with the only exception being an occasional surface, bubble dimple. Did not see 1 piece of cullet, not 1 marble half,no damaged marbles what so ever. I asked,Mike, specificaly, looking for more "affordable" examples, halves or cullet,--NONE. Mike Art had some of them in an antique co-op,(months)before they sufaced at the Lennox. They were priced, pretty much in line, with the prices being asked at the show.Of course, with a feeding frenzie going on,prices escilated to the max.My thinking is,someone was being Mikes "guide". There was no evidence on the marbles that "told" me they had been in the ground. At least 95% of the marbles were not color combo's I had EVER seen or heard of before. I have never seen any halves, cullet or marbles in the combo's that have been found by myself,or a half a dozen other marble diggers. Thats where Im at,,,,,, -

You Might Be A Marble Addict ....
FISHSLAYERMARRBLEGRIFF replied to Steph's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Love the art,,,doesnt trigger my marble noggen though.. I know how bad I have it. Can you imagine after digging marbles for so long,it doesnt matter where I see a dirt pile or a fresh dug hole,I have to scan it for marbles? 10 hour drive to South Portland, scanning dirt piles along the roadside, even though there are no marble factories close. Takes me a half an hour to plant 1 tomato plant,,,,gotta look at the dirt! NOW THATS NUTS!!!!! -

VERY NICE! -
I pesonaly never called those an egg yolk. Ive always refered to them as a flourescent popeyes.(lights up like fire under a black light). I can see where egg yolk popeye would fit,and sounds good to me. Dang!-Now I want an egg sandwich and some chicken!

Nasty Rumor Running Amuck
FISHSLAYERMARRBLEGRIFF replied to leroy65's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Ive been killed on 3 differant occasions, all starting with a car accident, back in high school. I shocked them when I came through the door on crutches. They lost their minds when I showed up at the reunions, twice! -

At least with open criticization, its a defendable situation. It could be worse, say, critcizing behind peoples back. Tell Linda I said hi,,,,,, -
Did they dig up another drain pipe in Cambridge? Now where is the tongue in cheek smiley?

I would treat a marble show, like you would a casino.Take what you are prepared,NOT to come home with. THANKS RODNEY! I had to stop making marble cases for now. Im designing a shock collar for Bill,so I dont lose my boat at an undisclosed island. Im thinking something in a 220,double pole should do the trick! I got a rocking chair down stairs, its dusty, and I dont plan on putting any butt prints on it,any time soon! I carry at least 3 fishing licenses every year because I like to multi task when going to marble shows. That running from point a to point b and back again is boring. Life is short,,,,,,,,,

Largest Vintage Handmade?
FISHSLAYERMARRBLEGRIFF replied to I'llhavethat1's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Many years ago,I polished a single ribbon that was over 3 inches, and it was still over 3 inches when I was done. No mistake,it was vintage,,,,came from the Ammana show. -
Overlayer or overlaid, seems to be more accurate than veneer. It would be fair to say that the process or effect is unique,to marbles. Pure speculation on this.I would guess this process was being developed to curb some cost. The marble factories were not non-profit companies, that were producing marbles, for the sake of the children. At the end of the day, bills needed to be paid.

I dont have any problem saying it is a veneered effect. I dont know what Howdyshell called it,Im sure he could have been wrong too. Many pieces of funiture that were veneered, lets just say mahogany for giggles, useing the real wood for trim, and a veneer for the flat surfaces. Its not an applied thin layer of color on the surface. It was a process that made it appear to be applied to the surface. There is a differance. Its just one of those trickey words like oxblood. That word means one thing in marbles, but out in the rest of the world, there are more choices of what it considered to be an oxblood color. I consider the marbles to have color, floating on the surface, and not a true veneer.
