I'm not right up to the minute on values on these five Parrots but what you're looking at is at least $100 each or thereabouts. I'm fully receptive to being corrected on this shot from the hip. David

Looks more like a Murrini sphere, you know millefiori. David

Love it Duffy. I just got a 1940s box of Tiddly Winks. E.E. FAIRCHILD CORP. Rochester, N.Y. Has everything including great cover of a boy and girl winking. Nice primary colors. Got it at the Fairgrounds Flea Market....Albuquerque. David -
Who Made This Pee-Wee Swirl
david Chamberlain replied to popculturizm's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
I don't think so as most of the Alley Agate Co. pee wees were 3/8" which is a lot smaller than as stated "slightly smaller than 1/2 inch." Maybe someone more familiar with the small Alley Agate Co. pee wees could weigh in. I've only had a few varieties and never a blue one. David -

I assume you're intimating something brewing with Marble King. Well, you can be sure that you most definitely are an outsider when it comes to Marble King and if anything were to actually happen there(One of the only two marble companies operating here at home) you would definitely not be invited. Why? Because you Galen could ruin a....well, in all deference to the sensitivities of some of the Board members I'll not finish that famous phrase. But I will say that your conjectures, innuendoes and baseless suppositions are par for the course. Negativity is your forte and you wield it with rapaciousness time and time again. You've got it right on figuring yourself as an outsider. I suggest that if you really have valid suspicions that something nefarious is occurring that you call Marble King and put them to rest rather than rile up the rabble somewhat like you did a couple years ago when you made wild ass conjectures of weaseling when it came to Patry Denton's estate. You amaze me in your capacity to shoot yourself in the foot time and time again. Have you nothing at all nice to say about marble runs in the USA these days? David Chamberlain -
With just a cursory glance they're all looking pretty much Peltier to me as well as the two Steph mentioned. David

Am I seeing things right 'cause it appears that half the time spent on this Board is involved in resurrecting Galen after he has committed some faux pas? I'd have thought Galen's 'contributions'(at least for this Thread) and any further consideration of them would have been brought to a screeching halt after Alan's chastisement of him for his ill considered remark. Well they are if you've been chewing bubble gum and it goes up your nose when it collapses! David

I guess there's a certain phlegmy quality to it. David

Contemporary Marble Question

Sounds to me cogent and you're hanging right in there with Matthews who I've always considered tops in technique. That's not to say that other contemporaries don't appeal to me even more aesthetically. David -

W V M C C Show And Mr. Marbles
david Chamberlain replied to Ima_ddicted's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Geeze, for a second there I really thought you were talking about me but then the fuller description came into focus and I realized what happened to me was at an entirely different show. As in my infamous marble article, "How 'Bout Them Marbles!" David -
Right you are and I was just reminded by another source that the story is clearly documented in AMMM. It's a job keeping all these incestuous marble bag stories straight. David Edit: Just got back from trying the mirror trick. My receptors must not be attuned. I even tried turning around three times. Do you think that I might actually have some Jabo resistance in me that is not allowing this to work. Hard to believe.
-
What do you figure the story is of the Alley marbles in the MK paks? I can't wait to hear what the tank mix was for the Alox run at Jabo. So that Black Aventurine is kinda jagged in some of the marbles from the run. Interesting. What could have caused that? By the way, 1st Official Marble Show & Sale/Akro Agate Coillectors Club Sat. As always Galen, you distance yourself when cornered by whatever inane comments you've clearly or unclearly stated previously. Messenger my a--! David -
So that's got to be some sort of viscous medium for them to remain suspended like that....right? I'm thinking clear corn syrup. David

Often ol' timers have repeated the same thing so many times that they begin to take on the semblance of first person narrative in the telling. That's my only guess. I have heard so many marble tales over the years that have been ascribed to The Barber. David

I have to wonder what it is that motivates you Galen because your contributions at this Board over the past few days have basically been equal opportunity insulting for just about anyone or anything, thread after thread. Marbles not any fun for you anymore? It sure doesn't seem as if they are 'cause you rarely have a good word for anything. Why not make an effort to look on the bright side of things for a change. Hell, it might even be possible to like you; you occasionally do have something to offer. David -
Contemporary Marble Question
david Chamberlain replied to cat's eye jack's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Update: In "Contemporary Marbles and Related Art Glass" (2001) Block says that "Matthews begins by making a cylindrical 'blank' of glass with specifically placed layers of colored glass. After the blank is cooled, it is covered with a masking material with a geometric pattern. After the pattern is sandblasted through the various layers of colored glass, the blank is then reheated, covered with another layer of clear glass, and then formed into two or three spheres." I suspect that's the short version! If you were to ask Mark Matthews you'd have to hang on to your seat or get lost along the way in a more detailed explanation because for every step involved he would have a half hour of explanation of exactly what was happening. I know I exaggerate! Still I prefer the 'sheer magic' explanation. David -
Contemporary Marble Question
david Chamberlain replied to cat's eye jack's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
I'm sure Rich can shed some light on your question but for me I have always considered it sheer magic. In my two conversations with Mark Matthews in which he expanded exponentially on specific marble techniques I stood there probably with a dumb expression on my face. I actually prided myself on the fact that I caught something here and there. Early on I encouraged Marilyn Barrett to definitely not miss having him in her 1992 book: "Aggies, Immies, Shooters & Swirls - The Magical World of Marbles." I can't remember if she got examples of his work to photograph directly from Mark or via Bert Cohen because I definitely steered her towards Bert. David Oh yeah, just PM Rich..... -

Did anyone say "out of the loop!" I suspect this fledgling organization will make its goals and missions evident within the near future. I think it is a wonderful and worthy endeavor from the little I am currently privy to. The initial recipients of this honor indicated above are each and every one a treasure in the field of marbles.
