That's a bit of a mind-blower! I guess I'll just have to content myself with my African Grey (Pooh Bear) and the White-Fronted Amazon (Pippen). David

A Reamer With A Re-Melt!
david Chamberlain replied to I LOVE MARBLES's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
I've actually collected reamers and had as many as 50+ at one time. Always thought of them as juice squeezers! No I only have a few high end ones. David -
Jobber Box? Christensen? Help Me Out Here
david Chamberlain replied to Diane's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
I'm hardly the definitive IDer on this set but you sure got a goody there. What's with the lone marble sitting on the bag? In brief these were made by Christensen Agate Co. , Cambridge OH in business for only a few years late 20s/early 30s. Looks to be all original. Great size! I'm just shooting from the hip but at the very least $5000(And that could be way off on the light side). As the other David says some of the heavies will weigh in on this and be more specific. And I fully agree! David

A Reamer With A Re-Melt!

"Extremely rare" is redundant! David -
This gets better and better. Thanks. David P.S. Clarification: When m!b$ states that two of the marbles in the pic are not Parrots because they have too much white I wonder what would be the percentage of white per surface area before we would disqualify the marble as a Parrot. I guess that would be a subjective thing between the buyer and the seller. I wouldn't mind hearing some thoughts on this.
-
This is a thread progression at its very best. I think what should be highlighted is Ron's statement that some Parrots can be patch pattern and larger Parrots swirl pattern. I'd always thought of Parrots as strictly being random swirl pattern. It would seem quite natural to call a smaller Parrot-like Vitro marble a Parakeet and I can see where the 5/8" example shown here would easily accumulate a four word name when we are attempting more and more to tie down these little devils. Granted there's contentiousness aplenty but depending on the various facets of marble activities you're involved in you can just as easily let it roll off you. Now I will grant that at times the Chat Boards seem to be populated with the formerly institutionalized who are being monitored for their ability to maintain and possible reentry to society; at least let out on the street. Maybe the best thing is to just steer clear of them. I don't always follow my own advice! David
-
I do not believe that the accelerated interest in marbles(or marble ventures) and increased values has in the least lessened the joy of marble collecting and involvement either here on the Board(s) or at the shows or in the general field of marble endeavors. That might be some perspectives but I'd have to say that they were missing the boat. Right now is one of the 'Hay Days' of marble enthusiasm! David

Blue White Brown Swirls
david Chamberlain replied to marboman's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Also still not seeing oxblood but there sure is a resemblance to those marbles in the 8th row/top of Scott's picture. Sure wouldn't have guessed Christensen previously! David -
Not entirely. It's a shape-shifting thing. Totally non-paranoid in nature because you ingest whilst amongst your favorite mibs. Del Morgan was on the wrong track with Marbleholocs; you don't want to institutionalize this experience at all or characterize it as being anything other than going with the flow. Anyone can do it. I'm a guide! David

If truth be told and EVERYONE that is deserving to be in a Marble Hall of Fame was nominated and approved the Induction Ceremony would not have concluded even at this late date. David

You don't have to worry about that new link working for me. I'm still banned and designated as "Can't play nice!" I couldn't have possibly asked for a better reason than that. It harkens back to childhood and bespeaks childishness for Kevin. David

I figured they were Industrials so I kinda had half an idea they were 9/16". That's the base color for them pretty much all the time isn't it? David -
Early on in my introduction to Marble Connection I ran through thread after thread in the back pages. There is a wealth of nice stuff there. Unfortunately many of the photographs seem to expire after a while. Just not enough carrying capacity for all of it? I kinda wondered about that. There'd be a thread I'd be interested in for myself and "Oops!" no pics or it would be one that I thought would be especially pertinent with whatever happened to be going on. That's why I went bonkers when for a while all the Threads back there were Locked. Like I was going to sabotage things! David

Grandma's 9/16" and smaller hand mades are impressive. And that 'Clown' Onionskin is outrageous....whoa! This Thread Rocks! David P.S. I would remiss if I didn't mention I'llhavethat's. There's just no end to over-the-top hand mades here.

Yeah, 'Tuller.' Been corresponding with but mostly visiting with on many occasions when I lived in California and we would have marathon talks mainly at the De Anza College Flea Market, Cupertino, CA. Clyde seriously knows his marbles. He's way past me in marble knowledge. David
-
Actually I would consider Clyde Tuller a worthy prospect. He has a deep and abiding love of marbles, his marble knowledge is astounding and he has always been willing to share his knowledge. He has applied himself to an understanding and appreciation of marbles that would be hard to surpass. He is a great pleasure to talk with and basically one helluva guy. David Chamberlain

Those feel like 9/16". I liked the interesting blues that turned up in the Foxfire II Tank Wash. Just got a couple hundred of them yesterday. One of the blues appears like paint on the marble. David -
Blue White Brown Swirls
david Chamberlain replied to marboman's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Of course, with only the picture to go by I can't see oxblood in that reddish-brown swirl. Just doesn't have oxblood movement to it from this perspective. You've got them in your hand though. Not seeing Alley. Don't know. David -
Nice. Scattered dings may not be NM to some but you can't beat the size and it is a Classic Superman and any other Superman pretenders must bow before it. David

As adroitly stated above by Alan nominations are meaningless without some spelled out criteria and just tossing around names here and there is ludicrous. But since Patry has been mentioned and commented upon here I would like to restate some of those things about her that would fit anyone's criteria for excellence in consideration. Patry was a most giving lady with spot-on marble knowledge from early-on machine-made immersion and well before it was considered de rigueur. Patry had a sly delight in pocketing the high-flyers in the marble ring. She knew these beauties intimately from her award-winning, inspired paintings of them. And she was a wordsmith par excellent, all the more amazing when she coined her own words and phrases in tribute to a special marble or anything else that touched her fancy. She once sent me a photo taken by her friend Elaine King of a Painted Bunting(a colorful bird) and said about it, "It's a hybrid 'Superbird,' no?" I wrote back, "Yes, definitely a 'hybird.'" ('ir' instead of 'ri' in case you missed it) Patry should be an inspiration and example to any of us who endeavour to concentrate on the sheer joy of marble collecting. She made it a point to stay above the fray and keep that special marble in her sights undeterred by any marble discord. We lost a true gem in the marble sphere, an irreplaceable marble enthusiast and a dear friend. Only last night in a reflective moment I thought....."Yes, Patry had all the qualities you could ever hope to expect in someone worthy of Hall of Fame stature. David Chamberlain

For info. on Parrots and Parakeets see American Machine-Made Marbles (2006) Shiffer Publ. By Johnson, Metzler & Six pg. 161 Your smaller marble in the group, the sixth one is not a Parakeet but it is nice nonetheless. No matter what you got a good deal. They are very desirable marbles. David
