Wishfully thinking Parrot?

Marbleized

Recommended Posts

According to my 5th ed. Block's book a parrot needs to be Vitro and 3/4ths to 1 inch, 4 patches of color the less white showing the better. Parakeets are the smaller ones. They (parrots and parakeets) may or may not have AV. These are mine. The 1st pic is the closest I have to a parrot. The 2nd pic the two on the left are parakeets. Any of this may have changed since it was written. Someone will come along with an updated definition. Thanks

Bruce

Parakeet is a collector’s name that has quite a few different definitions.

You could call the OP a Parakeet because of the size and a lot of folks may agree with you, then again a lot may not. The streaked yellow in the OP is seen in Parrots and it pushes me in that direction.

Parrots have been Parrots since they were made. I think that it is safer to call this a Parrot because of the multiple views on what a Parakeet is. You could find the “originator” of this “Parakeet” nickname and still be at odds on just what a Parakeet is in different circles.

I would call the ones that Berryb posted Tiger-eyes because the bottom line is, that is what they were marketed as, they may have nicknames as well. . (Except for the far right one which I do not recognize—may be an off the loop All Red)

Nicknames can get twisted and rearranged to the delight of the owner.

Marble—On!!!

Hi Everyone, Just wondering if this qualifies as a parrot. I know that it needs four or more colors, but does two types of blue count as two colors? Just found this in a jar of tiger eyes and cat eyes. The size is .67". Thanks for your expertise!

Berry B. , Bruce your second picture the two on the left are Vitro Tiger Eye marbles. Their construction is different than Parrots. The Tiger eyes have a ribbon or band around the center with patches on each side. The Parrots are swirled or patches side by side all over the marble.  Parakeets are just smaller size Parrots. Blaine Lemon Vitro plant manager told me his goal for a Parrot. Parrots were his favorite Vito marble. He said his goal was a white base 7/8 size marble with four colors not counting the white. The goal was a patch type but the larger size is more difficult to hold the patch pattern so many of them swirled. You see many swirl pattern on lots of larger Vitros. Blaine also said that of course many of the Parrots did have some white showing. The ones with no white showing are the better ones. The aventurine in some the Parrots was not planned.  The 3/4 size are just the same glass and on a smaller size machine or set of rollers. Of course if problems happened on the 7/8 machine, they would just switch to a 3/4 machine and keep the glass flowing. There are a few but very few 5/8 size Parakeets.

These are all 7/8 size. DSC06294.JPG.828158b8467800ca09022c43e531367d.JPGDSC06293.JPG.b03b0cd7cc5c6ce38c39ba09219e8ba1.JPGDSC05139.JPG.3d95af8d924fc3224d476f301b585bc2.JPG1588805887_Indy2011017.jpg.55b00a801f0b7cc962539c02e9e4f11f.jpg

Sorry about the mis-information. Turns out the Block's book was mostly right. I should have read more closely and been less distracted by the pictures. Thanks

Bruce

Regardless of the name--those are top shelf Tiger-Eyes. Very well-filled for sure.

Books and information regarding marbles is, and always will be-- in flux.

No apologies needed for sure.

I just call them like I see them---no disrespect is ever intended on my part.

Keep on Keepin on and Marble--On for sure!!!

This is how we all learn. The more opinions and discussion, the more accurate things will end up in the long run. None of us will always be correct. If I ever think that I am close to having all the answers correct. I will leave marbles.  A good thing, always learning something new or changed with the most updated info. It keeps marble collecting interesting for years and years.
