There have been a few posts recently about hand cut stone (agate) marbles. I got this one this summer at a garage sale. It is hand cut Malachite. The facets show, they have been polished down, but they are still visible. It is an inch and 23/32nds. Thanks Bruce

A couple of things I thought of; This glass was not made to glow under black lights. Black lights did not exist when these mibs and other items were made. The chemicals that cause the glass to glow were used as part of a formula to get a specific color of glass. As chemicals became unavailable because of price, turmoil in source countries, etc. they were discontinued or replaced, often with stuff that does not react to black light. Also most sulphide mibs react to black light (pretty faint but it is there). This is a mystery to me. The goal in glass for sulphides was to make colorless glass, why then the reactivity. Sorry about the long screed. Thanks Bruce

So the the big one maybe Pelt, probably MK. The smaller one, probably a Pelt copperhead, or close relative. Thanks Bruce

I think it may be Imperial (Japan) but since I am usually wrong....... Thanks Bruce

I think (others disagree) that the small egg shaped ones were done on purpose and used as darning eggs. Some Ladies gloves had very small fingers and so needed a small egg. Most you see are polished wood. but too many glass perfect eggs show up for it to be accidental. thanks Bruce

After looking at Akroorka's link I tried Baking soda. If my dentist is to be believed, it is actually less abrasive than tooth paste. It worked well on the mibs and left no dull spots, although they are not as minty fresh as I would like. Thanks Bruce

Did some horse tradin' yesterday. Got a bunch of slingshot ammo, but I did end up with these two. The big one is 7/8ths the smaller one is 19/32nds, and has more opal fire than most of the opalescent ones I have. Am I correct in thinking they are both Pelts? Thanks Bruce

I got some Marbles today at a yard sale. Mostly slingshot ammo, but there re some that aren't too bad, but they have rust stains. Any body have a good way to get rid of rust marks? I tried Windex but it wasn't much help. Thanks Bruce

I think the time may be right for Woodie for all other makers with wood grain mibs and Woody for Pelts. We already do Rainbo and rainbow. Too nit picky? Ok Prob'ly not a good idea. Thanks Bruce

I have read "woody" as a term for marbles but do not remember any kind of explanation to go with it. It makes more sense to have it narrowed down. Thanks Bruce

I think this is a Master (or MK). Just a hair over 9/16ths. Is this what's called a woody(ie)? If not can someone tell me about them? Who made them, what they look like, etc. Thanks Bruce

YOU"RE "FIRST" AND "SECOND FAVORITE" MANUFACTURER
Berryb replied to Chad G.'s topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
I guess Akro is my favorite, because they made corkscrews. After that I can't pick a second favorite 'cause I like em all. Mostly I guess I'm partial to anything pre WW2. CAC had the best colors, MFC made bricks, Pelt made NLRs, I love slags, whoever made them, hard to beat an old Alley swirl. So I'm on the horns of a dilemma here. I can't decide. Thanks Bruce -
I just got a notification the I have been given the "posting machine" badge. Is that a nice way of saying Annoying? Thanks Bruce

What Started Your Marble Obsession?
Berryb replied to PittsburghMarbles's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
What started me is not unusual. I got interested and bought some, I got some good deals early. I was a fishing tackle collector on a low budget. I got tired of getting skunked on tackle so I expanded to Marbles. I found if I diversified I was less likely to come up empty. Anyway more to the point; My obsession was fueled by long dry spells. I was gonna sell my marbles once but the dealer who was gonna buy them wanted me to go thru them and price them all. After I dug them out and started going thru them I got hooked again and needless to say I didn't sell. Another long dry spell had me just about ready to give up again. A few years ago I found the ones in the photo for 15 bucks and I was re-obsessed. This time I have kept at it, but find I need regular infusions of marbles to keep me going. Thanks Bruce -

I have gotten a bunch of marbles this week. I posted some pics a couple of days ago. Yesterday I did a trade for a bunch of stuff I got at yard sales for just that purpose. I got about 75 or so mibs. Here are some of the better (cleaner) ones. Of this group 3 went into the display case, I only had to take 2 out (the popeye replaced a nearly identical one with a fleabite). The rest got separated into my various jars. Thanks Bruce -
My first thought was Heaton, mostly because of the colors, so that about covers all of the makers. thanks Bruce

I don't have too many Hand mades, but I do have these; an onionskin lutz, 25/32nds, and maybe the most boring handmade ever, an inch and a quarter single pontil, clearie. Nuthin' goin' on in there but a few small bubbles. Thanks Bruce

I'd call 2 a PPP and 4 an Akro. Thanks Bruce

A guy and I were talkin' on Saturday, He collects old surveyor's equipment. Anyway he gave me about a gallon of marbles. About what you'd expect, lotsa slingshot ammo, but I did pull these out... An Akro with enough goin' on inside to be interesting, and enough ox to make me happy. Also a nice opalescent Rainbo. The 3rd photo is what I think is a messed up sunset and a weak Alley (or weak CAC). Weak but still nice. Thanks Bruce -
And these. Not fishing. The glass one is blown with an applied top. Swedish, I think. I think it's wine but not sure. The translations I have are from the internet and do not agree. thanks Bruce

I have been collecting fishing tackle longer than marbles. over the years I have picked up a few go-withs. thanks Bruce
