Keep you own time frame, no pressure. If we get a couple more positive responses I will start it. Thanks Bruce

I'd certainly keep it, it's a dandy. As for ox always being opaque: same view of a beat up mib, top light and back light. Actually I think the most striking thing about this mib is the blue in the backlit pic. Thanks Bruce

yup I changed my avatar. When I realized that my old avatar was a darning egg and not a mis-shapen mib I changed it. It may be a Heaton, at least there are some similarities with photos 5 and 25 in your dug Heatons thread. It looks like a comma. Punctuation joke follows; Let's eat gramma. Let's eat, gramma Commas save lives. thanks Bruce

I just had a thought; my avatar is a prefect egg shape, and there are other small eggs that have been shown here from time to time. What if they are not mistakes but purposely made to be darning eggs. are there any marble or glass factory records that show that they made or shipped darning eggs? The reason I have even heard of these is my mom had a few, but they were wood I think. Some were pretty small in order to fit in the pinky finger of a ladies glove. any thoughts Thanks Bruce

I was thinkin' (I know, scary, right) that it may be a while before anybody can get to a marble show. So how 'bout if a little show came to you? The tradin' part at least. So here goes: I would send 5 or 6 mibs to the first person on the list If they saw anyhing that they liked they would remove them and make a FAIR trade and forward to the next person. This would go to everyone on the list and the last one would send back to me. The only rules would be; no junk, all mibs would be VG or better, and be fair, don't take a CAC and replace it with an Asian cat(s) eye. The only other rule possibility would be only take out 1 mib, but that could be determined by you guys. I think it would take at least 15 people. So whaddaya think? Any input pro or con is welcome. Thoughts on how to make it work, new rules, or is it really a dumb idea. Thanks Bruce

Darning eggs were often pretty small. They had to be to fit into the finger of a ladies glove. Thanks Bruce

Looks like a Pelt Rainbo to me. Maybe a sunset? Thanks Bruce

Thanks disco005; I'm pretty sure I have corks that are undeniably Akro that switchback as well. The whiskers kinda' put it more firmly in Akro for me, but the mib is still a mystery no matter what it turns out to be. It is just too difficult to photograph. I think the best bet would be to let someone look at it in person at a marble show. If I ever get to one I'll take it. Thanks Bruce

Al; I still think it fits the definition of a corkscrew, the stripe runs from pole to pole more than one turn of the marble. You are right it does take a switchback at one pole, but I still gotta say cork even if not necessarily Akro. There are whiskers at one pole but since the mib is pretty much monochromatic they are hard to see and don't photograph well. Ron; you think it may be Jabo. I don't know much about Jabo, but it is my understanding that their runs are pretty well documented. Is there anyplace I can go to confirm that it is Jabo and get a manufacture date? I tried some more pics. Not sure how successful I was. The Black dots you can see are bits of oven brick, there appears to be at least one more inside. Thanks Bruce

I posted this mib a while ago, probably on the wrong thread. I just had it set aside because of the ox threads. But a closer look showed me that it is a snake corkscrew. A greyish white translucent almost transparent base with translucent white swirled in and a heavier but still translucent white snake coiled in it. The whole thing, except the ox, fluoresces under black light. I am wondering mostly about age and scarcity, but any input would be welcome. The photos are normal light, back light, and black light. Thanks Bruce

How about using "Spotted Richard". Thanks Bruce

Thanks folks, I have a sort of related question: Is clambroth a color? I know there is a specific type of hand-made called a clambroth, but is that name a reference to the color of the base glass or something else? It's kinda the same color as the "clam nectar" that is served when you get an "Acre of Clams" at Ivar's in Seattle. The nectar is the water the clams are steamed in, hence my question. Thanks again Bruce

yesterday. I was s'posed to be Christmas shoppin' but I had to hit one of my favorite junk stores. I only ended up with four but I'm happy. A crockery more swirled than lined, a hand cut 1/2 inch agate with a nice chip, my only clambroth to date, but with a pretty good flake gone from the side, and a 23/32nds rainbo in really nice condition.

Yup, they're fake. I could kinda tell from the description, but then Steph's assessment clinched it. Just to make sure I looked on e-bay. To be fair Nick is not the only one selling them, but he is the only one getting 50 bucks apiece for them. These things just won't go away. I have seen them in antique shops for 15-20 bucks each, but they seem to have arrived on the secondary market for even more money. A friend of mine has a few, even when I pointed out that felt pens did not exist in that time frame he's still not totally convinced. Thankfully he only paid a couple of bucks each for his at a yard sale, of all places. Thanks Bruce

Two of my favorite akros. No matter what I do the second photo will only load upside down. The last time I posted this pic it was right. Thanks Bruce

If that is blue milk glass it should be opalescent when a strong light is shone thru. Blue opalescent glass is not that common, and I have never seen a marble made of it. Thanks Bruce

Marbles and black lights are loads of fun. Thanks Bruce

Ravenswood packaging video with Ron Shepherd
Berryb replied to stephenb's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Watched it this mornin'. Outstanding as usual. Thanks Bruce -
Gonna resurect this thread 'cause I hit a moving sale yesterday. I got this plate. It's a full size transferware dinner plate, probably from the 1870s or 80s. The reason I'm posting is on the left rim, two marbles, or more likely carpet balls. I looked on the internet and there is a full color version. the top one is bright red with a gold band.

wow nice stuff

It used to be "If it aint MFC or Akro it aint oxblood" Thankfully that isn't true anymore. The old definition was brownish red like dried blood with black hair-like stripes through it. I think that definition came from marble collectors not the makers. I remember oxblood shoes, they didn't have black hairs in 'em. Definitions change, as long as most people agree with it. I think you can safely say ox but maybe not Akro. Thanks Bruce

Steph: Is there a difference between "a pistachio" and pistachio colored glass? The reason I ask is, I have mibs I always considered pistachio -both Akro and Pelt, that do not light up. Cool mib by the way, Marbleneophyte. It's always a treat when they light up that way. Thanks Bruce
