  1. for surface finish that rough, try putting it in a shallow bowl of water and take a pic. The interior detail will show up much better. Looks like it could be close to the example from the book that Steph posted, although if the base glass is blue (appears to be) that makes it a fairly uncommon marble.
  2. The unusual thing about these examples, is the pontil is on the opposite side of the pattern than expected. I'm still with Vintage transitional, and good eye for picking them
  3. Some nice Pelt patterns. Top two are super nice
  4. I'd agree! a lot of research and studying goes into (what eventually becomes) experience. Keep your eyes peeled, there are always questions being asked, good pictures and good people on this forum that can lend some assistance.
  5. They look an awful lot like Akro Corkscrews but I'll go with non-USA transitional.
  6. Came across these from a friend and I haven't seen too many of them around lately so thought I'd share. Anyone know what a complete set looks like?

    MFC?

Definitely handgathered. If German, look for evidence of a ground/faceted pontil. Might be hard to see in that condition.

    MFC?

Almost looks like a Pontil in the last pic (the way the pattern loops to it)
  9. The middle Vitro looks to have a neat pattern
  10. My first guess as well. Maybe a conquerer of some type?
  11. Appears to be another one straight above it. The brown/green to it's right is a color combo I've seen attributed to Ravenswood but could be Alley, hard to tell from the pics.
  12. I'm not up on my minerals but it does look like a polished stone to me. "Lupin" or something like that is what comes to mind
  13. The blue one looks like a German handmade Mica (probably around 100 years old), the other ones look like machinemade marbles, probably also European and maybe a bit newer than the blue one.
  14. real nice displays guys, jten those slags are sweet. I really like to see other peoples collections and how they're displayed, humbling actually
  15. Nice one, would have been my first guess since I have the same combo and think it falls in that category. "Canadian Mushroom". I really think there is something to the location these are found in tho'
  16. wow! It's gotta be an Akro though, right?
  17. Bottom left could be an Alley Coral, top right could be Pelt, other two I don't recognize
  18. They all look Vitro from the pictures
  19. I like these wacky ones. and am glad they didn't get discarded. It is a little surprising they'd still spend the time to grind/facet the pontil...although at that point 90% of the labor and materials would already be into it.
  20. Yeah, these ones are tough to ID and years ago there was discussion on origin. I believe the common opinion was "Foreign" meaning non-USA (they seem to be found more often in groups of marbles in Canada, UK, Australia and parts of Europe). Red and white are probably the most common color combo, and sizes over 1" are a lot less common than the ~5/8" sizes.
  21. The one you pictured is different in the sense it's deliberately a colored base glass where others could be argued as a 'tint' caused by UV (purple) or contamination in the clear glass (ie: yellow or bluish tint). And the colored outer bands too are odd too. Most of the deliberate colored ones I've come across are a white latt and white outer caged bands typically on a deep blue, emerald green, or amber yellow base glass
