I have a bunch of un I.D. mibs of which I believe to be a are a mix of Cairo, Davis and Jackson with maybe a few Alox in the mix, just wanted to know if anyone collects any of them and how to really distinguish one from the other, not common all had a short run except Alox 1919 - 1989. Davis 47 - 48, Cairo 46 - 50, Jackson 45 - 46 all extremely short runs. They're never talked about so maybe a good subject, I'll take some pix later after some discussion and see about the I.D. 's Not highly desired but an important facet in marble history, somewhere along the line they fell into obscurity. My Jackson & especially Davis pic folders are very limited, provenance ( where, who, when, why ) also, reasons being why they were so short lived and or absorbed by another manufacturer ?? I have pic folders from each and every manufacturer in case I get lazy and need to present known examples, from Joes mibs & other reliable I.D. sites etc....

CAC electric yellow slag, "Poppin" only slags w/ defined cutlines like that, forget me and I.D. on the old hand gathers, they all look the same to me. As far as the turkey head, you can see a turkey head somewhere on almost any type swirl there is. However only CAC has the genuine turkey head type swirl on it, as well as you're moving along get a couple good examples of known & genuine CAC's in you sites and it will be a lot easier to I.D. them in the future. I hope this will help you a little on some of the easier I.D., I have to dig a little for some swirl pics. I feel sorry for those poor souls, unknowingly and quite literally working themselves to death, but boy did they make some beautiful mibs or what !!

I have a bunch of oversize giants & .75's and a couple hundred commons but these are the most exotic I own right now, I have a few surprises on the way.

"Great pics Ric" I guess some of them actually laid down on their stomach on a 35 deg. inverted board to give them the capability to work longer instead of getting sore backs, don't know if it's true or not but supposedly that's where the term " Putting Your Nose to the Grindstone" came from

"Absolutely Bruce" some I have look machine made, people seen them & said they where to perfect, but they have a much different shine, that's what made me bust out the loupe and check for facets. These guys making them didn't have an extended life expectancy, the dust from the agates, and the stone went in their lungs but didn't come out. Contributing to I suppose a variety of lung problems they where unaware of at the time. There was no OSHA coming around making sure you had your mask on.

I have a few but not many rare or exotic ones any more, workin on it the split up in 09 & subsequent sale of a 23 yr collection kinda put a damper on the VVHTF mibs I once had in abundance, so 9 yrs. ago I decided to start all over again. Just letting you know I didn't just pull these names out of a hat. I know these are both rare colored mibs, how many have you seen?? Guess I could have explained it better, that's what I meant by dull sheen on factory and visible ripples on hand made, some of my better hand ground I tell you I couldn't see the facets until I used the loupe, could be because I'm half blind ?? Thanks Ric for shortening it up.

I wish I could see you in person and show you the difference between a hand ground and machine ground, I'll do my best to explain. The newer machine ground are only worth about 2 - 5 bucks apiece "tops" depending on what they are made of. The surface will have a perfect unwavering kind of dull looking sheen under mag. The old hand ground (You'll have to get a loupe to start ) 10 - 20 x, will have a slight wavering pattern around the entire mib, some of the guys that ground these got really good at it, a production oriented atmosphere and if your marbles weren't up to par or you didn't produce enough, down the road you went. Just because there are hits on it doesn't make it antique, you can't tell if it was hit yesterday or 100 yrs. ago, the only advice I can give you on these is to find a definite example of both and that will erase most of the questions for you. Most of the older ones didn't get much over 1" with the greatest value being in the died ones, Blue and especially green are usually twice as valuable as the common carnelian bullseyes you & I have. The biggest mib I posted is only about 3/4, the little white agate is a peewee, 1/2" right on the nose. If you have a good sense of touch you can feel the faceting on most hand ground but it's not going to happen overnight. Good luck Tommy, have fun. Chad

2 colors counting the base is a prize name : three or more colors a special, many specials have their own collector names as do some prize names I.E. specials like the "life saver" you have. : both kinds of cork whether a "prize name" or "special" if given a collector name are generally worth more either for their rarity or distinct color combinations.

Yes, correct a clambroth With permission of the {MSCA} Marble Collectors Society of America You have an excellent example there that should fetch top dollar, one of the rarer colors and a high number of evenly spaced surface strands, & at least from your pics looks to be in excellent mint condition. You'll have to wait on another to post for an accurate appraisal. I only have the cased type myself. DEFINITION : A recent cased auction from Ebay : A picture one of mine with some other handmades, this one is identical to the one in the auction, size is 19/32nds mint I believe the cased type is a little rarer but the black ones like yours are a softer glass & harder to find in mint condition so the value should be pretty close, maybe slightly less, maybe more at auction ??
