good luk with that steph ... seems not to many want to show these little pretties and have them " dissected" as to .. are they real or ... not. and there has, to my knowledge, been no glass analysis done to give another insight to these. is there a reason .. why not ?? never can get definative with these other than personal testimony. money well spent ... or .. :character-smileys-238: .... bill

Steph, it's been a long time since any have been offered on ebay, but my recollection is that they are extremely colorful striped opaques. Not sure if they came as striped transparents. I never heard of any that were not mint, which is a little unusual. I have seen what were called "circus marbles" at a couple shows and these may have also been the same thing as the "exotics". They too are very colorful and bright. As far as I know, they only came in small sizes. It would be nice if someone would post a photo of one. Surely someone who reads this board must know someone who bought one once upon a time....Actually, Alan Basinet must own some exotics if anyone does.

Not all exotics were mint. Some had fractures and imbedded dirt. They came in striped opaques, striped translucents, striped transparents, submarines, and possibly guineas. The exotic name got stuck on any really colorful cac whether it may have been a true exotic or not. Regardless of when found or even how long in a collection. Even before the find in 2000. Now people dont want to put that name on them. I bet that any collector that collected cac's even semi slightly bought some. Most probably still have some. Some people wont admit they they do. Bill's comment is correct. I bet he has some though. I might have a few. See me at a show? Look me up. I'm not hard to find.

The circus marbles were passed off as cac's at beginning. They brought big prices. They ended up being German. A few color combos of German striped opaques can still bring good money. The circus and the blue/black come to mind.

Alan has sold many in the last 12 months. I have examined a couple under 45X magnification and found the exact same surface as on CAC 2 seam slags that I have.(definitely machine made) I still have a problem feeling 100% OK with them. Having been in the antique business for years it is one of the number one rules that if it is too good to be real it probably isn't and I had a very knowledgeable person once tell me, If it wasn't then-it probably isn't now. Meaning, something that is only known in recent times probably isn't old. I own 2 they are beautiful marbles but I am not spending big money on them. Until some one shows me some in original packaging or some very clear pictures of some taken before 1990.

If I remember right it was more profitable to call them exotics than dug marbles , they were very well kept and sold in little quantities but then ?? they started out as just dug marbles but I think they evolved since ??? Mike

Interesting thread!

What about all those beautiful CAC striped transp- and opaques in the book -collecting early machine-made marbles-

by Robert S.Block, they didn't exist before 1990 or is it only the name ""exotic"" that did exist after 1990?

There are a large ammount of extra bright and beautiful types that only appeared recently Winnie.(there are some pictured in that book) They are called Exotics by many collectors. Most CAC collectors know when they are holding one of the "Exotics". It would be impossible to describe in writing the difference in the "Exotics" and a regular extra special CAC striped transparent or striped opaque.

One story is they were found in one big hole in the ground during a Cambridge city pipe laying project. Another is that the all came from the home of an employee of CAC. Almost all of them can be traced back to one of a very small group of people.(one of the reasons they are questioned). This is a subject that will probably always remain controversial and unproved one way or the other. One reason is that too much money exchanged hands for these marbles when they first appeared.(hundreds of thousands of dollars?) And nice examples are still selling in the 500-1000 dollar range.

when they first appeared they were shopped around the shows ...behind closed doors and muted speak...psst...ck these out....it was very sneaky and underhanded in my view and others....they were dealt under high security and certain parties were whisked around the halls and escorted to cetain locked rooms where the elders were summoned... i can remember guards were placed outside to divert people away from the parkin lot to eliminate the possibility of unwanted people seein seein the marbles...all very sneaky and unfriendly....somebody knew where they came from and who was intended to see em...im purty sure theres a few on this board who know exactly where they came from...prob a couple who wished they knew and will try to convince you that they know....have you noticed that..... its always the few same people connected to controversial dealings....hmmmmm....

Wow!! ReEEEEEEEEEEeally love the new look Lou!!! Thank you for all the cool improvements fer sure!!! :)

Great topic Steph. All I can say is that I can see a difference in the pics and the mibs aren't even in my hand. Check out the seams everyone.

Seems to me that the seams seem more obvious in the newbies. The real CAC's have a more perfect seam, tho I have a few that you can feel the seams with your fingernail, but overall you can't. That is the first clue.

Now the color, there is another clue. The newbies (Shamrock's) have a more colorful, near electric, overall appearance compared to the real CAC's. I'd swear that some of those are sporting Peltier colors. That is clue #2.

One last clue, for me anyway. This one is important if you can feel my vibes here. The Shams look more deliberate compared to the unmitigated randomness of the pattern in the true Chrissie's. You may have to have an eye for art in this case, sorry.

But then again, these are the Shamrock examples that went explicitly into boxes with no ambiguity or secrecy. Is there another (better) maker causing a true alarm? A true forger that even the likes of Galen is afraid of? Is that what this is all about?

So far I am not fooled by the examples shown. I'll ask Willie if he has an exotic I can look at in hand.

@Speed Racer -

"But then again, these are the Shamrock examples that went explicitly into boxes with no ambiguity or secrecy. Is there another (better) maker causing a true alarm? A true forger that even the likes of Galen is afraid of? Is that what this is all about? "

That's the real issue. Shamrock has been upfront by NOT using CA colors on purpose and adding an etched gold shamrock to the marbles. Has there been someone that has not been upfront in the past? I personally think some of the exotics are real, however $10 marbles are not usually faked, $1000 marbles may be more of an incentive.

Also, I have seen well seasoned collectors buy and sell the Shamrocks as CA's both on eBay and at shows paying top dollar. There are a few collectors that are better versed in CA and what to look for, but only a few. I'm with Duffy, if the method of selling them had been out in the open with no back room dealings this would not even be an issue. This is just my opinion that has absolutely NO backing or proof. So I am not looking to start an argument!

The marbles shown by marboman were mine. I didn't enjoy owning them because of all the stink surrounding them. I'm not sure how much cabbage I lost but I know it was at least my left nut and my right nut is still missing! But here's the good news, some king has 200 million dollars that he has left for me! All I had to do was send him $25,000.00 to help him flee his country. YEEHAWW mon!
